#3. 10 Cafes to Get Some Studying Done

For instagrammers:

1. Artis Coffee

1717B 4th St.

Berkeley, CA 94710

Artis is a must-go for coffee lovers- its live roast bar delivers delicious fresh coffee for its customers daily. With a lively yet warm atmosphere, contemporary interior with wooden tables and chairs, spacious area with ample seating both indoors and outdoors, large windows, free wifi and outlets, Artis serves as both a studying and resting spot.

How to get here: Take the 51B (Berkeley Marina/Amtrak direction) and get off at University Ave. & 6th St. Walk two blocks down and turn right on 4th St. Keep going until you arrive at your destination on the right (towards the end of the 4th Street shops).

2. Highwire Coffee Roasters

5655 College Ave.

Oakland, CA 94618

Conveniently located where Rockridge Market Hall is, Highwire has a good selection of fresh bread, tarts, and cookies on top of its coffee made of high quality beans.

How to get here: Take the 51B (Rockridge direction) and get off at College Ave. & Rockridge BART station. Walk south towards Shafter Ave. (the opposite way from the direction of the bus) until you arrive at your destination on the right (you have to cross the street).

*There is also a Berkeley location (2049 San Pablo Ave.).

Location, location, location:

3a. Caffe Strada

2300 College Ave.

Berkeley, CA 94704

A population destination among UC Berkeley students, Strada is one of the first cafes I encountered during my college career. Strada's outside seating is great during warm Californian weather, and the Strada Bianca Mocha and carrot cake are a must-try.

3b. Café Milano

2522 Bancroft Way

Berkeley, CA 94704

Super close to campus, open until 12AM on weekdays, a large sitting space both downstairs and upstairs, free wifi, and antique ambience- now that’s my idea of a good study spot. Milano is an ordinary yet ideal place to study for many Berkeley students.

4. Café Blue Door

2244 Bancroft Way

Berkeley, CA 94704

Despite the name, the door isn’t actually blue… or is it? Blue Door is a great alternative to the library- plenty of tables and outlets- but the seats fill up fast especially during exam season so make sure to go early. Overall, a good place to get some work done with a sandwich and a latte.Try the lemonade with crushed mint, floor coffee (espresso with vanilla ice cream, almonds, and caramel), or nutella hot chocolate.

You can never go wrong with:

5. Philz Coffee

6310 College Ave.

Berkeley, CA 94618

Mint mojito iced coffee. Need I say more? This Philz Coffee on College and Claremont provides a cozy environment for those who can find a seat. You can even get some grocery shopping done at Safeway, located next to the cafe. The other Berkeley location (1600 Shattuck Ave.) is another good choice for studying.

6. Blue Bottle

4270 Broadway

Oakland, CA 94611

Located in the historic W.C. Morse building in Oakland, this Blue Bottle cafe provides a "paradoxically modern" interior with large windows from which you can get your daily dose of vitamin D. You can't go wrong with the famous New Orleans iced coffee or the liege waffle! The only downside is that there is no wifi, but I mean, it's Blue Bottle! Go get some reading done while you are surrounded by natural light.

Close enough:

7. Sack’s Coffee House

2701 College Ave.

Berkeley, CA 94705

Garnished with burlap coffee bags all around, Sack’s provides a nice vintage and motivating atmosphere to study in. Try the chocolate chai and red velvet cookie!

8. The Beanery

2925 College Ave.

Berkeley, CA 94705

The front room has many outlets under the seats, but don’t worry if you don’t find a seat there because there are more seats in the inner room as well as the outdoor patio. With fast wifi and good drinks, you'll find yourself focused and getting work done.

9. Au Coquelet Café Restaurant

2000 University Ave.

Berkeley, CA 94704

Au Coquelet is the only cafe around Berkeley that it is open until 1:30AM on weekdays and 2AM on weekends. This is important here at UC Berkeley where studying spots are not only scarce but also bounded by time.

Opened recently:

10. Sodoi

2438 Durant Ave.

Berkeley, CA94704

Sodoi (pronounced So-Do-I) has a unique ambience, with messages of positivity on the walls all around. Good wifi, good music, and good coffee= quality study time!
