Ra:On, 라온. 얼핏 들으면 이국적인 이 단어는 “즐거운”을 뜻하는 순 우리말이라고 한다. 2006년도 키보드,기타, 베이스, 드럼을 치는 네 명의 학생들은 Rock이라는 매개체로 하나가 되어 4년이란 기간동안 오직 음악에 대한 열정으로 클럽을 꾸려나갔다. 그리고 2012년 현재까지 라온은 첫 시작보다 규모 뿐만 아니라 업적, 다양성, 그리고 비전이라는 측면에서 훌쩍 성장했다. 특히, 그들이 유투브에 올린 싸이의 ‘강남 스타일’ 커버 영상은 조회수가 300만에 이르는 기염을 토하며 그들이 이제 세계인의 관심을 받는 음악인들임을 보여주었다. 우리 버클리 오피니언은 기존의 라온 소개에 더불어 화제의 ‘강남스타일’을 만드는 과정, 그리고 앞으로 라온이 나아갈 방향을 취재해 보았다.
Ra:On. When you hear this word for the first time, it might sound exotic, but it actually means ‘Joyful’ in Korean. In 2006, four students who played the keyboard, the guitar, the bass guitar and the drums were connected by Rock music which motivated them to create the club ‘Ra:On’. Since creating Ra:on until now, the year 2012, they have grown much more in number, achievements, diversity, and vision. Specifically, the Gang-Nam Style Acoustic version which they created hit 3,000,000 views on YouTube, which obviously shows that they are now known around the world. Berkeley-Opinion will talk about Raon's beginning, the story behind the making of the Gangnam-Style acoustic version and where Ra:On is heading in the future.

Q.안녕하세요. 이렇게 시간을 내주셔서 감사합니다. 이번 MT를 합동으로 주최하게 될 라온을 소개하고 알리는 계기를 만들고자 이런 자리를 마련했는데요. 이승준 회장님, 간단한 클럽 소개 부탁드려요.
(Q: Hello, Thank you for making your time. Since we will be collaborating for the Retreat hosted by Berkeley Opinion and Ra:On, I would like to introduce Ra:On to the people. President, Seungjun Lee, will you introduce Ra:On?)
이승준 (기타&키보드): 예, 안녕하세요. 2010년 입학한 이후부터 꾸준히 활동해 온 회장입니다. 기존에는 드럼으로 활동을 시작했었는데, 동아리 내에서 기타와 키보드가 빠지게 된후에는 종종 멀티테스킹을 하곤 합니다. 저희 클럽은 음악을 사랑하는 사람들이 모여 오직 ‘락을 즐기자’라는 모토 하나로 모임을 가지는 클럽입니다. 저희는 무엇보다 가족과 같은 끈끈한 동료애를 중요시하는 단체이고요. 한인 최초 락밴드의 회장으로 당선된 것을 굉장한 영광으로 생각하고 있어요. 늘어난 책임만큼 사명감 있게 클럽을 이끌어가고자 노력하는 중입니다.
Seungjun Lee (Guitar&Keyboard):Hello! Since I entered Berkeley in 2010, I have worked hard for Ra:On. I started playing the drums, but when the people who played the keyboard and the guitar left, I am actually taking on their jobs. Our club was created by people who love the music, and we certainly believe in our motto “Enjoy Rock”. Our club believes that all members should be very good friends with one another like family, and I am honored that I was elected president of the first Korean rock-band in Berkeley. I want lead the club with strong sense of duty as I have responsibility for them.
#활동 - Activities
Q. 그럼 이제 클럽의 활동 방식에 대해서 좀 더 알아보겠습니다. 일단 멤버 소개와 역할분담에 대해 말씀해주세요. 또, 정확히 어떤 식으로 만남을 가지고 연습을 하는지도 말씀해주세요.
(Q: Now I am going to ask how the club functions. Can you please introduce your members and their role inside the club? And tell us how you guys meet and practice.)
김병준 (드럼): 저는 라온에서 Administrative vice-president를 맡고있는데요. 보통 멤버 관리, 콘서트 안건등을 관여하는 직책입니다. OT나 콘서트 장소 마련 및 시간 조정 등 라온의 사무를 원활하게 하고자 노력 중입니다. 그리고 또 다른 한명의 vice-president는 정효찬 군이 맡고있습니다. 이 분은 좀 더 음악에 관련된 일을 하시는데, 콘서트 곡 선택이나 공연 순서 결정 및 연습장소 제공에 힘 쓰고 계십니다. 이외에는 한 명의 매니저가 있으며, 리더들 외에 9명의 멤버를 포함한 총 12명의 식구들로 이루어져 있습니다.
Eric Kim (Drums):Hello, I am the Administrative vice-president of Ra:on, I take care of the members and concert matters. I put my best effort to manage the time and location for activities such as the orientation and Ra:On concerts. Also, Jung HyoChan is also a Vice-president. He is taking care of musical activities, such as selecting our repertoire, arranging concerts, and arranging practice locations. We also have a manager, and other 9 members, We have a total of 12 members in Ra:On.
김병준: 처음에 라온에 가입할 때 하나의 특기를 보고 포지션을 정하는건 사실이지만 꼭 한 명 당 한 포지션으로 제한시키지 않습니다. 회장 이승준 군을 보면 알 수 있듯이, 저희 멤버들은 다양한 포지션을 소화해내고 있습니다. 예를 들어, 전효창 군은 기타 뿐만아니라 드럼도 맡고 계세요. 4명의 보컬이 있고 또 나머지는 드럼, 기타 ,키보드를 곡마다 다르게 분담해서 연습 중이에요. 저희는 매주 토요일 2시부터 5시까지 연습을 하는데 따로 저희만의 음악실이 있는게 아니라서 기숙사의 뮤직 룸이나 지하실에서 연습을 해요.
Eric Kim: When people join Ra:on, we position them depending on their talents. However, we do not limit members to one position. For example, the president LeeSeungJun plays more than one instrument. Another example, member JunHyoChang does not only play guitar, but also plays the drums. There are 4 vocals, and others play the drums, guitar and keyboard simply depending on the song that we are playing. We have practice every Saturday from 2 to 5 pm. Since we don’t have our own room to practice, we are always either going to the music room or in the basement of our dormitory.
#음악적 성향 - Musical color
Q. 본격적으로 라온이 어떤 음악을 추구하고 또 선호하는지에 대해 알고 싶습니다.
(Q:I want to know what music you pursue and prefer)
이재민 (보컬): 말할것도 없이 당연히 Rock이죠. 저희들이 한인 최초의 락밴드인 만큼 한국 Rock에 대한 많은 자부심을 가지고 있어요. 한국 음악을 많이 연습하지만 그렇다고 하나만 추구하지는 않아요. 미국 Rock도 연습하고 다양한 장르의 음악을 저희 스타일로 편곡해서 부르고 연주하기도 해요. 개개인으로써는 Rock만을 유일하게 선호하는 것은 아니기 때문에 공연 때 종종 발라드나 댄스곡도 부르고는 한답니다. 물론 락밴드이기 때문에 저희의 특색을 최대한 살리려고 노력하는 편이구요. 2010년 가을에 있었던 공연에서는 성시경의 '내게 오는길'을 편곡해서 부르기도 했는데, 큰 호응을 받았어요.
Jamie Lee (Vocal): No doubt that it is Rock. Since we are the first Korean Rock Club in Berkeley, we are very proud of that. We are practicing a lot of Korean music; however, we also practice American Rock and other different kinds of music to digest as our style. It truly depends on the members and people because they don’t prefer only Rock music; we sometimes sing ballad and dancing music at the concerts. Certainly, however, we are trying to characterize those songs as Rock. In 2010, we sang SungSiKyung’s ‘The road to me’ and many people loved it.
Q.보통 연습을 할떄 다양한 음악을 연주하신다면 공연 때는 주로 어떻게 선곡을 하시는지 궁금하네요.
(Q:I heard you guys are practicing different kind of music each time at every practice. I am curious about how you select music or songs for the concerts)
전효창 (기타&드럼): 아무래도 선곡은 그 공연의 테마에 따라 달라지는 경우가 많죠. 일 년에 가장 큰 OT공연 때는 신입생들도 많고 많은 관객들이 오기 때문에 주로 대중적인 음악을 많이 선택하는 추세입니다. 보여지는 음악을 한다는 건데요. 이렇게 해서 더 많은 호응을 얻을 수 있는거 같아요.
Michael Jun (Guitar&Drum): Our selection of music depends on the theme of the concerts. For example, for one of our biggest concerts at Orientation, we chose popular music for the new entry student and other audiences. Those songs are for show performance, therefore we could get more of an impressive response and our club comes into the spotlight.
#’강남스타일’에 대하여 - About "Gangnam Style" cover.
Q. 우선 ‘강남스타일’ 대박을 축하드립니다. 유투브 조회수가 300만에 이르렀는데요, 소감이 어떠세요?
(Q: Congratulations about your Gang-Nam Style video, over 3,000,000 people watched your video on youtube, how do you guys feel? )
김병준 (드럼): 무엇보다도 이렇게 많은 관심을 주신 분들께 너무나도 감사드립니다. 아직까지 저희가 부족한 점이 많아서 이렇게 사랑받을 줄은 예상하지 못했는데, 막상 이렇게 호응이 크니 정말 기쁘네요.
Eric Kim (Drum): Thank you to all people who support us. Also, we really didn’t expect to have this much attention from people since we aren’t perfect. But I like getting attention from people who have love for our music.
Q. 이번 ‘강남스타일’ 커버 동영상을 만들게 된 계기가 궁금합니다.
(Q:What inspired you to make Gangnam Style Acoustic-Version?)
이승준 (기타&키보드): 저희 라온은 멤버들이 모일 때마다 악기를 지니고 즉흥적으로 연주를 하면서 노래를 하는 경우가 많습니다. 이번 ‘강남스타일’ 커버도 그렇게 탄생하게 되었어요. 저희 라온과 버클리 오피니언이 이번 가을에 함께 엠티를 갔었는데요, 가는 길에 ‘강남스타일’이 라디오에서 흘러나왔고 그 때 제가 재미삼아 기타로 연주를 하고 김현진 양이 그에 맞춰 노래를 했었죠. 멤버들이 거기에 영감을 받아 정식으로 커버를 해보자고 제안했고 지금의 ‘강남스타일’ 커버가 탄생하게 되었습니다.
Seungjun Lee (Guitar&Keyboard):Our club members bring their musical instruments so we can play and sing together in our meetings. In fact. the Gang-Nam Style Acoustic Version was created in one of our meetings. On the way to Raon & Berkeley Opinion’s retreat, we heard the Gangnam-Style Song and I decided to play the guitar. While I was playing the guitar, HyunJin started singing, and that is how we got the idea to re-make the song.
Q. 라온의 ‘강남스타일’은 그 독특한 편곡이 시청자의 이목을 끌었다고 들었습니다. 편곡을 한 사람은 누구고 편곡의 포인트가 뭐죠?
(Q:We heard that the unique feature of GangNam Style re-make version draws a lot of attention from the people. Who made the re-make the GangNam Style and what is that unique feature?)
이승준: 편곡은 제가 차 안에서 기타로 쳤던 것을 기반으로 직접 했습니다. 편곡의 포인트는 김현진 양의 목소리였어요. 김현진 양은 동영상에 나오는 라온의 보컬인데요, 깨끗하고 맑은 음색에 알맞는 비트와 리듬으로 편곡을 했습니다.
Seungjun Lee: The remaking of the song is primarily based on the guitar instrumentals that I played in the car; I tried to highlight HyunJin’s Voice. As you can hear her voice on YouTube, we recreated the music with the beat and rhythm that best fit her voice tone and color.
Q. 라온의 ‘강남스타일’에 관심을 보이는 사람들은 주로 어떤 사람들인가요?
(Q:Many people showed an interest about Ra:On’s GangNam-Style. Do you know or have statistics about who is watching your video?)
이승준 (기타&키보드): 그 부분은 저희가 정말 신기했던 부분이기도 한데요. 유투브 조회 순위를 살펴보니 1위가 미국, 2위가 캐나다 3위가 영국이고 한국은 8위이더라고요. 저희가 한국인으로 구성된 밴드인 만큼 한국보다 다른 나라에서 조회수가 훨씬 높을 거라고는 예상하지 못했어요.
Seungjun Lee (Guitar&Keyboard): That was the most interesting part. We looked at the amount of views, and in order, the US had the most views, then it was Canada, then England and surprisingly, South Korea had the eighth most views. Since we are a Korean group, we didn’t expect the most amount of views from other countries.
김병준 (드럼): 유투브 조회수가 올라가고 라온이 큰 호응을 얻으면서 라온 페이스북 페이지의 라이크 수가 200개 정도에서 1000개 이상으로 늘었어요. 많은 분들께서 월에 글을 올려주시고 메세지를 보내주셨는데, 폴란드나 하와이 등 예상치 못한 곳에서 많은 연락이 와서 신기하기도 하고 감사하기도 했죠.
Eric Kim(Drum): As we have been getting more YouTube views, Ra:On's Facebook page increased from 200 "likes" to more than 1000. Many people have been writing on our wall-post and sending us messages. Interestingly, I was impressed that many of the people posting stuff on our wall-posts were from different places around the world (e.g. Poland and Hawaii).
Q. 많은 관심을 가져주신 시청자들께 드리고 싶은 말씀은?
(Q: Any comment for your audience?)
이승준: 저희가 정말 음악을 사랑하고 열정으로 뭉친 밴드이지만, 학생이라는 제약 때문에 기대하고 계시는 분들께 더욱 빨리 좋은 음악으로 다가가지 못해서 아쉽습니다. 하지만 저희도 최선을 다해 여러분의 기대에 걸맞는 음악을 준비하고 있으니 더욱 더 많은 관심 가져주시고 사랑해주셨으면 좋겠어요.
Seungjun Lee: We put this group together because of our love for music, but it is hard to actually make music because we are still students. Nonetheless, we are working hard for you guys, so please keep supporting us! Thank you!
# 앞으로의 활동 방향
Q. 앞으로의 활동 방향은?
(Q: What is your future plan?)
이승준: 저희는 원래 공연을 위주로 하는 밴드였는데요, 다음 여름까지는 EP를 내는 것을 목표로 전 멤버들이 열심히 노력하고 있습니다. 따라서 그 때까지는 공식적인 공연을 하는 것은 힘들 것 같아요. 아무래도 한동안은 오프라인보다는 온라인을 위주로 활동할 것 같아요. 하지만 펀드레이징이나 거리 공연과 같이 소규모의 공연은 지속적으로 할 계획이니 지켜봐주세요!
Seungjun Lee: Our band’s primary goal is to perform in concerts; we are planning to make an EP for next summer, and all our members are striving to meet our goal. In the meantime, we will be focusing more on online activities than offline ones. Nonetheless, we will perform small, street concerts for fund raising. Please support and watch us! Thank you.
Q. EP는 어떻게 진행되고 구성될 예정이죠?
(Q:What are the specifics about EP?)
이승준: 아직 정확한 부분은 미정이지만 5곡에서 6곡 정도를 수록할 예정이에요. 곡 구성은 이미 끝이 났고 몇 곡은 녹음도 진행중입니다. 대부분은 자작곡이지만 ‘강남스타일’과 같은 색다른 커버도 몇 곡 수록할 예정이에요.
Seungjun Lee: We haven't decided yet, but we are thinking about 5 or 6 songs. We already finished several songs, and we are in the process of making a few more songs. Most of the songs are self-composed, but we are also thinking to put some special songs like "Gang-Nam Style" cover song.
Q. 다음으로 대중에게 선보일 곡에 대한 계획은 있나요?
(Q:Is there a song you are planning on next?)
김형준 (기타): 다음 곡으로는 ‘빠다코코넛’이라는 노래를 준비하고 있어요. 이것 역시 즉흥적으로 만들어진 자작곡이에요. 저희 멤버끼리 모여서 노는 와중에 빠다코코넛이라는 과자를 먹다가 승준이 형이 영감을 받아 작곡했는데, 재미있는 가사와 중독성 있는 멜로디가 특징입니다.
Hyung Jun Kim (Guitar): We are preparing for the song ‘Bbadda coconut’. This self-composed song was also made spontaneously. While we hung out, we ate some crackers named ‘Butter Coconut’ Consequently, SeungJun was inspired by the crackers and we made the song. The unique features about this song are its funny lyrics and the addictive melody.
필자가 지켜본 라온은 때로는 열정적으로, 하지만 또 때로는 여유있게 음악을 즐길 줄 아는 멋진 밴드였다. 그들에게 톡톡 튀는 의외성과 창의력, 그리고 그 밑에 깔려 있는 음악적 실력이 있었기에 아마추어로서 300만에 가까운 조회수를 기록하는 쾌거를 이룰 수 있지 않았나 싶다. 앞으로도 멈추지 않고 음악 활동을 하며 더욱 더 많은 사람들을 즐겁게 해줄 라온에게 격려의 박수를 보낸다.
In my opinion, Ra:on is very passionate but also sometimes enjoying music at a leisurely pace. Because of their musical ability with unusual creativity, Ra:on resulted in a splendid 3,000,000 views on YouTube as an amateur. Kudos to Ra:On and I hope Ra:On continues to do more activities, concerts and songs that will cheer people up.
