Top 10 shows to binge watch on Netflix

Amid all the midterms, crying, and papers during my last 3 semesters at Cal, I’ve come to realize that I had somehow managed to find the time to finish 10 television shows that are available on Netflix. Looking back, there hasn’t been a single show that I disliked, given I simply cannot finish a television show unless it truly impresses me. 

1. Money Heist

1. Money Heist, or La casa de papel, is a Spanish heist crime drama series that depicts a criminal mastermind called “The Professor” planning and executing the biggest heist in recorded history. I personally consider the show to be one of the best modern television shows that was created in terms of its production and cinematography. Although it is only 3 seasons (relatively short compared to other shows that will be introduced in this article), the film masterfully conveys a sense of thrill to its audience and its portrayal of character development is one of the finest I have ever seen. The emotional roller coaster of loving and hating and loving again each and every character is something I believe to be unique to Money Heist. If you have not watched this series yet, I cannot recommend it enough. 

2. Master of None

1. Truly a hidden gem. It’s not super funny. It’s not thrilling. Yet, there is something enthralling about the show. It’s one of those television shows that you’ll find yourself binge-watching at 2am in pajamas while eating cookie dough. Follow the love life of Dev played by Aziz Ansari and watch him grow from an immature sex fiend to a responsible adult that cares for others and himself. The show addresses a lot of issues of our current society, such as racism in the entertainment industry and the discrimation against the LGBT community in the United States, in such a subtle yet heartwarming way that you won’t even notice the show’s message unless you truly dig deep in and put yourself in the shoes of Dev. 

3. Parks and Recreation

1. A classic. Each and every character is so quirky yet is impossible to hate. From the overly indifferent Ron Swanson to the overly nosy Leslie Knope, the 7-season TV show is probably one of my personal favorites. You’d be crying with Ann, laughing with Tom, and laughing at Jerry. Frankly, the plot isn’t the greatest and by the end of the 5th season it does feel quite mundane and repetitive. Nonetheless, each character is so lovable and the humor that is integrated into every single scene is simply genius. Parks and Recreation is a great show if you’re in need of a good laugh. 

4. Breaking Bad

1. Probably the most preeminent crime television series on Netflix right now. If Rotten Tomatoes gave the show a 96%, you already know this show about to be good. So much great things to say about this show but I’m worried any more comments about the series could subtly spoil the plot so I’m going to keep this review short. There’s also a new movie, El Camino, that was released pretty recently as a sequel of the show that reunites fans with Jesse Pinkman, the protagonist and the beginning of this drama. Hands down the greatest show with the greatest ending. Both a MUST-watch.

5. Bojack Horseman

1. If you’re not 18 yet, skip this section by the way, although you’d be missing out on a review of probably one of the best mature adult sitcoms out there (other than Rick and Morty of course). Though I do agree season 1 was horrendous and made it excruciating to sit through, the ensuing seasons are truly great. As the name of the show suggests, the series portrays a fallen Hollywood star called Bojack Horseman -- a one hit wonder. Through the countless number of blows and bottles of vodka, Bojack comes to a realization and with the help of Diane Ngyuen, he is able to get his life together. We, as audiences, can truly see how Bojack grows and it is, in a sense, quite heartwarming. Initially, the humor might not be a selling point; however, the quirkiness soon grows on the audience and you will begin to sympathize with all the characters.

7. Narcos

1. Not sure what the deal is with Spanish telenovelas but so far they’ve been very impressive and successful. Season 1 is mainly establishing the backstories of its four seasons. However, it will definitely be worth your time. Each cast is so perfect to the character they play. If you’re interested in the life of Pablo Escobar, definitely watch!

8. Black Mirror

1. If you’re not much of a binge-watching person, I still got you; each episode of the Black Mirror has its own characters and plot. Think of it as a modern rework of the Twilight Zone. Each and every episode blew my mind because the show masterfully builds suspense and thrill like no other. Almost all the episodes of Black Mirror have so much depth that there are discussion threads for each episode to discuss the various symbolisms, metaphors, and foreshadowing in the film. Personally, I recommend Nosedive, The National Anthem, Hated in the Nation, Fifteen Million Merits, and Shut Up and Dance. 

9. Orange is the New Black

1. Beware: There is a lot of sex. Based on the book with the same title, Orange is the New Black is probably one of the quintessential Netflix Originals. The quality of the show is consistent; there hasn’t been a single episode that I thought was underwhelming (Yea, I’m talking to you GoT cast). Although the show would be great if you have the dedication to find time to finish and enjoy all seven seasons over a period of time, there is simply an absurd number of people with numerous back stories; consequently, I would definitely recommend to binge watch and embrace the show as a whole. Be wary though: even if you do end up binge watching, it will take you more than 3 days as the show has 91 episodes and counting!

10. The Office

1. You’ve probably at least heard of the show; every single character in this show is dumb except for maybe the happily wedded couple Pat and Jim. Nevertheless, Pat and Jim are still immature as well as any other character including Dwight, Andy, and last but not least Michael Scott. I feel like the show truly shines when you watch the episode from beginning to end; there is a reason why people watch the whole show multiple times. There’s a reason how The Office has remained steadfast as the most popular TV show ever created. Not much to say as the show will speak for itself.
